How many hours of wedding photography do I need?
Most common asked question!
Probably the number one question on a newly engaged couple, who are looking for a wedding photographer. How many hours of coverage do we need for our wedding?
I have covered weddings that last as short as 4hrs. And some weddings which are way over 12hrs in length. During these coverage hours, I always thought to myself if this many hours is enough or too much for what they want. The truth is that the couple maybe is misinformed, or never asked on what they want from the coverage.
As a newly engaged couple, you need to ask yourself two questions before you consider how many hours of coverage you want.
- Do I want a story about my wedding day?
- Or document the wedding?
If you want a story of your wedding, you will need at least 8 hours of photography coverage. You will have a complete story of your wedding day, from getting ready to the grand exit.
BUT, and yes there is a BUT here! This will only work if your wedding is well organized and well planned. Thus, having a wedding planner/event coordinator can significantly help as they deal with the logistic of getting things done when they suppose too.
A lot of weddings that do not have a planner, coordinator tends to fall apart and needs more coverage hours to tell a complete story of your wedding. And the reason for this is because it was not well planned out. You need a certain amount of time for prep, bride/groom, bridal party, family, first look portraits. I will discuss this in another article since that is another topic altogether.
So basically, a well good planned wedding will only require 8 hours of coverage, which will cover everything you need.
On the other hand, if you just want your wedding documented, then first decide on what minor events you want to be covered and work from there.
